Crescendo Sweater

£6.00

The Crescendo Sweater is a chunky-ish sweater with a lace yoke featuring a repeating diamond motif. It’s a great option for chilly days thanks to its hearty wool content. The design is modern yet feminine and, if I may say so myself, is very fun to knit! The pattern includes a chart for the lace and a large amount of technical guidance, as I use a fairly idiosyncratic increase method through the yoke.

Please note that there are 2 pattern pdfs in this listing as well as a downloadable knitting chart. The first file has the ‘standard’ formatting suitable for printing and use on a computer/laptop monitor, tablet or phone; the second has been formatted to be dyslexia-friendly by a graphic designer familiar with accessibility in writing.

Please note that this is a pdf digital download and not a physical knitting pattern.

Materials & Fit

Notions: 6 mm and 7 mm circular needles. You may find a 40 cm needle useful for the collar and sleeves, a 60 cm needle for the yoke, and an 80 or 100 cm needle for the body. However, if you are comfortable with the Magic Loop technique, you could also just use the 80 or 100 cm needle for the whole project. Whatever works best for you!

You will also need a couple of stitch markers, one of which should be in a contrasting colour to indicate the beginning of the round, a darning needle, and some spare needles/scrap yarn/stitch holders where the stitches of the sleeves will rest.

Yarn: Approximately 34 (4) 4 (4-5) 5 (5) 5 (5-6) 6 (6) skeins of We Are Knitters Ecolana (100 g = 200 m) and 34 (4) 4 (4-5) 5 (5) 5 (5-6) 6 (6) skeins of Drops Kid-Silk Mohair (25 g = 212 m).

Yarn alternatives: West Yorkshire Spinners Re:Treat is about the right weight for this project, and any mohair/mohair alternative will work well. Please note that some alpaca-based mohair alternatives are a bit thicker than most mohair yarns. If you would prefer to omit the mohair/mohair alternative entirely, just choose a slightly thicker yarn like We Are Knitters The Petite Wool.

Tension: 10 x 10 xm = 14 sts x 20 rows in stocking stitch on 7 mm needles. My vertical tension tends to be quite tight, so if yours is loose don’t stress too much, especially if there is only a row or two in it. If you need to, feel free to go up or down 0.5 mm needle size to tighten or loosen your gauge until you are happy.

Sizing and ease: The Crescendo Sweater has about 5-15 cm positive ease. If you would like a closer fitting or looser garment, size up or down accordingly.
