Valley Sweater

£6.00

The Valley Sweater is the Aosta Sweater’s sister. It is worked flat in panels and then seamed together at the end. It has a drop shoulder design with a good amount of positive ease built in, giving the garment a relaxed and slightly boxy finish. It is worked in Andalusian stitch all over with minimal shaping. Each panel is worked from the top down to mimic the look of the original Aosta Sweater design. The front panel is slightly more complicated; first, the left shoulder is worked and then left on hold. Then, the right shoulder is worked, mirroring the left. The shoulders are then joined together with some stitches cast on in the middle of the row. When the panels of the sweater are finished, stitches are picked up along the edge of the collar, which is folded in half for a modern and feminine finish.

Materials

You will need 6mm and 7mm needles (straight or circular, depending on your preference, though circular needles may make picking up the collar stitches easier), a darning needle, a stitch marker, and a spare needle or stitch holder.

You will need approx. 6 (6) 6/7 (7) 7-8 (8) 8-9 (8-9) 9 skeins/840 (840) 840-980 (980) 1,120 (1,120) 1,120-1,260 (1,120-1,260) 1,260 metres of the Petite Wool by We Are Knitters or any alternative yarn that matches the necessary tension. The sample garment was made with the Petite Wool in the shade Pearl Grey with an added strand of Filcolana Tilia in the shade Latte (at 210m per skein, you would need 4 (4) 4-5 (5) 6 (6) 6 (6) 6 skeins). Any silk-mohair blend would make a lovely addition to the finished fabric, but is by no means necessary. It will make the final piece feel a little bit more luxurious and may also help with the overall structure. Note that adding/removing the mohair might affect your tension by a stitch or two, so you may wish to change your needle size accordingly by 0.5mm either way.

The sizes XS (S) M (L) XL (2XL) 3XL (4XL) 5XL are intended to fit a chest measurement of roughly 80-85 (85-90) 90-95 (95-100) 100-105 (105-110) 110-115 (115-120) 120-125 cm with around 20 cm positive ease to achieve a relaxed fit. If you wish to have a tighter fitting sweater, you may wish to go down a size.
