Amiata Sweater


The Amiata Sweater is a perfect addition to your autumn/winter wardrobe. It’s a simple and elegant design with a neat feat across the shoulder and a slight balloon sleeve. It’s great for confident beginners looking to master some new techniques, like German short rows and double-folded collars, but is also a nice project for more experienced knitters looking for a mindless knit.



Yarn: Approximately 560 (560-700) 700 (700) 700-840 (840) 840 (840-980) 980 (980) (980-1,120) metres, or 4 (4-5) 5 (5) 5-6 (6) 6 (6-7) 7 (7-8) skeins of We Are Knitters The Petite Wool ( 140m per 100g), (optional: held with a strand of lace mohair, e.g., 630 (630-840) 840 (840) 840 (840) 840 (840-1,050) 1,050 (1,050-,1260) metres, or 3 (3-4) 4 (4) 4 (4) 4 (4-5) 5 (5-6) skeins of Drops Kidsilk Mohair), or any alternative yarn that meets the required gauge (see below).

Needles: 7mm and 8mm circular needles. I recommend having a 40cm cord for the first half of the yoke and the sleeves, and at least an 80cm cord for the second half of the yoke and body. You may also find a 100cm cord helpful. I know that 7mm needles aren’t that easy to find in the US, so if you have trouble getting 7mm needles 6mm or 6.5mm will work fine too.

Notions: 8 markers (one of which should be contrasting to indicate the BOR), a darning needle, scissors.


10×10 cm/4×4” = 12 stitches over 18 rows in stocking stitch on 8mm needles

Knit, wash, and block a 10×10 cm/4×4” swatch in pattern before casting on.

Sizing and fit

 This sweater is intended to have between 5-10 cm positive ease, meaning it will measure between 5-10 cm larger than your own chest circumference. The fit is unisex, as there is no shaping at the waist or hips, but it is written on the assumption that your chest circumference will be the widest point of your body. If this is not the case for you, please keep this in mind when you are choosing your size. Please refer to this table to pick your size:
